A Cryogenic Tank Booster Skid

 

A Cryogenic Tank Booster Skid is essentially a Pressure Builder. Its primary function involves using a small, horizontal ambient air vaporizer to vaporize a portion of the liquid LNG drawn from the storage tank. This generated gas is then routed back into the top of the tank, increasing the internal pressure. This elevated pressure forces the remaining liquid LNG out through the discharge outlet.

 

These booster skids are widely used in LNG vaporization stations to ensure a steady supply of pressurized liquid to the main vaporizers. Conversely, the same principle applies during unloading operations: a booster is used to pressurize an LNG tanker truck, forcing its cargo into the local cryogenic storage tank for containment.

Equipment Configuration and Workflow

 

  • LNG Storage Tank: A cryogenic vacuum-insulated vessel with a typical water capacity ranging from 20 to 150 m³.
  • Ambient Air Vaporizer (Main): A finned-tube assembly that utilizes ambient air heat exchange to vaporize LNG into gas at ambient temperature.
  • Forced Reheater/Vaporizer: Specifically designed for cold northern regions to ensure the outlet gas temperature remains above 5°C.
  • BOG/EAG Heater: A finned-tube assembly using ambient air heat exchange, primarily dedicated to reheating low-temperature natural gas.
  • Booster Vaporizer: Available in two configurations: Truck Boosters for unloading operations and Tank Boosters for liquid discharge.
  • Pressure Regulation, Metering & Odorization Skid: A skid-mounted unit featuring imported main regulators and odorant pumps, typically employing a "one-operating, one-standby" dual-path design.
  • Control System: Provides centralized monitoring of level, pressure, temperature, leak alarms, and flow; implements interlock control between safety detection points and upstream emergency shutdown valves to ensure operational safety.
  • Safety Vent System: A comprehensive, regulation-compliant centralized venting design comprising EAG heaters, flame arrestors, and vent stacks.
