The piston or plunger is the moving part that creates suction and pressure within the pump. It is typically made of a durable material like stainless steel or ceramic to withstand the forces generated during operation. The cylinder is the stationary part that houses the piston and provides a sealed chamber for fluid to be pumped.


Suction and discharge valves are located at the inlet and outlet of the pump, respectively. These valves open and close automatically to control the flow of fluid into and out of the pump. The suction valve opens when the piston moves away from the inlet, creating a vacuum that draws fluid into the cylinder. The discharge valve opens when the piston moves towards the outlet, pushing fluid out of the pump at a higher pressure.


Working Principle

The working principle of a reciprocating pump can be summarized in three main steps: suction, compression, and discharge.


During the suction stroke, the piston moves away from the inlet, creating a vacuum within the cylinder. This vacuum opens the suction valve and draws fluid into the cylinder. As the piston moves further away, it fills the cylinder with fluid, preparing it for the compression stroke.


In the compression stroke, the piston moves towards the outlet, compressing the fluid within the cylinder. This increases the pressure of the fluid, closing the suction valve and opening the discharge valve. As the piston continues to move, it pushes the fluid out of the pump through the discharge valve.


During the discharge stroke, the fluid is forced out of the pump at a higher pressure than it was originally drawn in. This pressurized fluid can then be used to power various systems or processes, depending on the application.
