What Is LNG Terminal Regasification Technology?

Natural gas is becoming increasingly important as a clean-burning fuel in meeting global energy needs. One of the most efficient ways to transport natural gas is through liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. LNG terminals use advanced technology to convert natural gas into a liquefied state, allowing it to be transported efficiently over long distances. One such terminal is the Cove Point LNG terminal in Maryland, which recently underwent an expansion project to increase its regasification capabilities.


The Cove Point LNG terminal is located on Maryland's Chesapeake Bay and is owned and operated by Dominion Energy. In operation since 1978, the terminal has played a vital role in supplying natural gas to the eastern United States. In 2018, Dominion Energy announced plans to expand the terminal's regasification capacity from 3.8 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) to 5.5 cubic feet per day. Bcf/d.


The regasification process involves converting LNG transported through LNG terminals back into a gaseous state for delivery to end users. The Cove Point LNG terminal expansion project includes the construction of two new regasification units that are expected to increase capacity by 2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) per terminal. The units will use advanced technology to vaporize LNG and transport it through pipelines for distribution. The project also includes the construction of new storage tanks and other necessary infrastructure to support the increased capacity.


The Cove Point LNG terminal expansion project is expected to be completed in 2021. Upon completion, it will be able to transport an additional 5.5 Bcf/d of natural gas to the eastern United States, enough to meet the daily energy needs of more areas. More than 5 million households.
