EFC Secures NASA Xenon Reprocessing Contract

EFC Gases & Advanced Materials, a high-purity gas technology company based in Massachusetts, has secured a five-year contract to support NASA's xenon reprocessing needsThe project, valued at up to $5 million, will involve EFC transporting, processing, and purifying approximately 500,000 liters of recovered xenon mixture for NASA's space and propulsion research. This work will be conducted at EFC's Rare Gas Center of Excellence in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, which specializes in the purification, recovery, and recycling of xenon, krypton, and other rare gases.

EFC CEO Pavel Perlov stated that the contract underscores the company's commitment to advancing sustainable rare gas purification. He added, "We are honored to support NASA's mission and contribute to the reusability and cost-effectiveness of this critical inert gas resource."

NASA primarily uses xenon as a propellant for ion thrusters in deep-space missions. Xenon is easily ionized and has a high atomic mass, allowing it to produce the necessary thrust when ions are accelerated.

Xenon is a versatile inert gas predominantly used in high-intensity lighting (e.g., automotive lamps, projectors), medical applications (CT contrast agents/anesthetics), spacecraft propulsion fuel, industrial laser processing, and scientific research. Its inert stability, high luminous efficiency, and low toxicity make it a key material for high-tech industries.
